Stage award records, season by season, 1955 to 2026

What these stage award records cover, season by season

Seventy-two seasons of stage award records, from the first in 1954-55 to the present, grouped by decade below. Each decade opens to one row per season, and each row says how many categories were awarded that season and which source those award records rest on. Any season with a surviving record page links straight through to it, so the detail is one click from the index.

Two things make this index worth consulting rather than skimming. The first is reach: it starts at the beginning, including the decade when the awards ran under a different name entirely, and for most of that early stretch no other public structured index exists. The second is that it tells you when it is unsure — entries that could not be confirmed against a second source are marked, rather than presented at the same confidence as everything else.

The category list is not stable across the seventy-two years, and that is a feature of the record rather than a flaw in it. The first design heading appears only in 1968-69. Sound arrives eleven seasons later again. Set design becomes scenic design and then splits across musical and play. A designer working across one of those changes will appear under two names for the same kind of job, so it is worth reading a person's entries as a run rather than in isolation.

Early seasons often list several winners in one category, and that is what happened rather than a fault in the transcription. Multiple awards per category were normal on the stage before nominee shortlists became the format in the mid-1970s, so where you see three names under one heading in 1969, none of them is a runner-up. Reading these stage award records without that in mind makes the early decades look far messier than they were.

The season that did not happen

    7 seasons · 65 winners · 11 categories · 1 season with no ceremony · checked against published records

One season in this decade has no winners in any category. New York theatres were shuttered from March 2020 to September 2021, and the record says so rather than skipping the year.

Worth knowingThe blank season is kept in the index on purpose. A gap with a reason attached is more useful than a missing row.

    Fourteen headings, and a fight

    10 seasons · 87 winners · 14 categories · checked against published records

Costume design splits, sound design splits, and Outstanding Fight Choreography arrives as its own award. The craft list reaches its widest point in the awards' history.

Worth knowingFight choreography getting its own heading is the clearest example of the pattern: a specialism gets named once enough productions employ a specialist.

Projection design appears. Unlike every other heading on the list it is not a craft that was previously going unrecognised — it is a job that did not exist until the equipment did.

Worth knowingLighting splits into musical and play in the same decade, following scenic design's example from the 1990s.

    The categories start splitting

    10 seasons · 53 winners · 7 categories · checked against published records

Scenic design divides into separate musical and play awards. It is the first sign of a pattern that runs for the next thirty years: one craft, then two headings, as the workload in each stops being comparable.

Worth knowingSet design also becomes scenic design here, which is why one designer's run can appear under three different category names.

    Renamed, and suddenly much bigger

    10 seasons · 93 winners · 21 categories · from the original announcements

The awards were renamed after the 1963-64 season, and the category list went from four headings to twenty-two inside ten years. The first craft heading of any kind, set design, finally appears in 1968-69.

Worth knowingSet design arrives 15 seasons in, costume design the season after, and lighting design not for another five. Before that, the people who built the show are simply absent from the record.

    Archive documents

The announcements themselves, as they were published: press releases, nomination lists and the reference pages that sat alongside them. These are held at their original addresses because other sites cite them directly, and several are quoted in published writing about the awards. They are reproduced rather than summarised.

    Questions about the award records

How far back does the record go?

To the 1954-55 season, the first one. The earliest decade ran under the Vernon Rice name until 1963-64, and those seasons are held here from the announcements issued at the time.

What does "cross-checked" mean on a row?

That the entries for that season have been compared against a published external source, category by category. Rows marked as archive come from the original announcements only, because for those years no second source covers them.

What happens when a category heading is missing?

The season's own page says so, in a sentence above the entries it affects. Where the surviving copy lost a heading, the entries below it inherited the one above, so the heading is the most likely one rather than a recorded one — and that is stated rather than smoothed over.

Are nominees listed as well as winners?

From the mid-1970s onward, yes. Before that the awards did not work that way — several people could be honoured in one category in the same year, and there was no shortlist to publish.

Can I use these records elsewhere?

The facts are public record and free to cite. Where an entry rests on a single source that is stated on the row, so you can judge how much weight to give it before repeating it.
