49 TH ANNUAL DRAMA DESK AWARDS TO BE TELEVISED IN NEW YORK ON NYC TV AND NATIONALLY ON SELECT PBS STATIONS
The 49 th Annual Drama Desk Awards, which will be held on Sunday, May 16, at 9:00 PM in the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center, will be televised in New York City and Los Angeles, it was announced here today by Robert R. Blume, the Drama Desk Awards Executive Producer. Awards will be presented in multiple categorieshonoring excellence during the 2003/2004 New York theatre season. The Drama Desk is the only major theatre organization that honors Broadway, Off and Off-Off Broadway equally in all categories.
The awards will be shown on NYC TV Channel 74, the official television network of the City of New York, and on Channel 36 in Los Angeles. In addition, the program has been offered to PBS stations nationwide.
The broadcast agreements were spearheaded by Roy A. Somlyo, who recently joined the Drama Desk Awards production team as Executive Consultant, after serving the past five years as President and CEO of the American Theatre Wing.
The Drama Desk Awards also will be webcast live in its entirety by TheaterMania.com on Sunday, May 16, starting at 9:00 PM. Backstage interviews will be recorded with the winners and presenters, and interview highlights will be webcast a few days following the live event.
Nominations for the 49 th Annual Drama Desk Awards will be announced on Thursday, April 29, at 8:30 AM from the New York Friars Club by Drama Desk and Tony Award winner Mary-Louise Parker. The Nominees Cocktail Reception will be held at St. John Boutique, 665 Fifth Avenue, on Thursday, May 6, 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
According to Blume, “Roy Somlyo will focus on obtaining sponsors and greater visibility for next year’s gala 50 th Anniversary edition of the Drama Desk Awards, as well as coordinating the network broadcasts of next month’s awards. He will also provide his expertise garnered from his experiences as a producer of the Tony Awards over a 37 year period.”
NYC TV General Manager Arick Wierson says, “We are pleased to be partnering with the Drama Desk to showcase the best and brightest of the theatre world - a key component of New York City’s cultural vibrancy and a major driver of our local economy.”
The 49 th Annual Drama Desk Awards on May 16 will be executive produced by Robert R. Blume, produced by Lauren Class Schneider and directed by Jeff Kalpak. William Wolf is the President of the Drama Desk, an organization of theatre journalists, editors and critics who cover the entire New York theatre scene, and Randie Levine-Miller is Director of Special Projects for the Drama Desk. NYC TV Channel 74 will produce the television broadcast and TheaterMania will produce the webcast.
A limited number of tickets to the 2004 Drama Desk Awards are being made available to the public at $125 each. VIP Tickets are also available at $400 each and includes priority seating and invitations to all VIP parties.
