48th ANNUAL DRAMA DESK NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED!!!

HAIRSPRAY TIES ALL-TIME RECORD WITH 14 NOMINATIONS, FOLLOWED BY AMOUR WITH NINE NOMINATIONS, TAKE ME OUT WITH EIGHT, LA BOHEME AND A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE WITH SEVEN NOMINATIONS EACH AND NINE AND MOVIN' OUT WITH SIX EACH

AVENUE Q AND LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT WIN FIVE EACH

New York, NY, May 1, 2003 - Hairspray, the smash Broadway musical, dominated the Nominations for The 48th Annual Drama Desk Awards, which were announced here today, by capturing a total of 14 nominations, tying it with The Producers, The Secret Garden and Ragtime as the shows with the most nominations in a single season.

The Michel Legrand musical Amour received nine nominations followed by Take Me Out with eight, Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme and A Man of No Importance, each with seven. Also faring well were the Billy Joel/Twyla Tharp musical Movin' Out and Nine which garnered six nominations each, and Avenue Q and Long Day's Journey into Night which received five nominations each

Cirque du Soleil: Varekai, Medea, Uncle Vanya and Zanna, Don't! each received four nominations, while Dinner at Eight, Gypsy, Talking Heads, Twelfth Night and Yellowman all received three nominations. Productions with two nominations each included: Buicks, Cookin' at the Cookery, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, Enchanted April, Golda's Balcony, My Old Lady, Our Lady of 121st Street, Polish Joke, Shanghai Moon and Vincent in Brixton.

Sisters Lynn and Vanessa Redgrave each received nominations - Lynn as Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play (Talking Heads) and Vanessa as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play (Long Day's Journey Into Night).

Chita Rivera who will host The 48th Annual Drama Desk Awards on Sunday, May 18, at 9 PM, received a nomination as Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical, along with her Nine co-stars Jane Krakowski and Mary Stuart Masterson.

Tim Acito won three nominations Outstanding Music, Outstanding Lyrics and Outstanding Book of a Musical for Zanna, Don't!, Among those who garnered double nominations are: Philip Seymour Hoffman (Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play for Long Day's Journey into Night and Outstanding Director of a Play for Our Lady of 121st Street); Sam Mendes (Outstanding Director of a Play for Twelfth Night and Uncle Vanya); Joe Mantello as Outstanding Director of a Play for Take Me Out and Outstanding Director of a Musical for A Man of No Importance); Donald Holder (Outstanding Lighting Design for Movin' Out and Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Toward the Somme); Mark Bennett (Outstanding Sound Design for Golda's Balcony and Julius Caesar); John Lee Beatty (Outstanding Set Design of a Play for Dinner at Eight and My Old Lady); Alexander Dinelaris (Outstanding Lyrics and Outstanding Book for a Musical for Zanna, Don't!); and Twyla Tharp (Outstanding Director of a Musical for Movin' Out and Outstanding Choreography for Movin' Out).

The Drama Desk also voted to present Special Awards to The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) for bringing works of distinction from around the world to New York audiences; Charles Busch for career achievement as performer and playwright; and Geoffrey Johnson and Vincent Liff (posthumous) of Johnson-Liff Casting for career achievement.

The nominations were announced by Oscar winning producer Martin Richards (Chicago) and Judy Kaye, co-star of Broadway's Mamma Mia, who were introduced by Drama Desk co-Presidents David Sheward, Managing Editor of Back Stage, and William Wolf of Wolfentertainmentguide.com. The nominations ceremony, webcast by Theatermania.com, was held at The New York Friars Club.

The 48th Annual Drama Desk Awards will take place on Sunday, May 18, at 9:00 PM at the F.H. LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center. The awards show, hosted by Chita Rivera, will be webcast live by Theatermania.com.
