The 47TH ANNUAL DRAMA DESK AWARDS, celebrating excellence in all sectors of New York´s theatre world, will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2002, at the Concert Hall in F.H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, it was announced by David Sheward, President of the Drama Desk, and Robert R. Blume , Executive Producer of the awards telecast. For the seventh consecutive year, NY1 News will provide live television coverage of the event in its entirety starting at 9:00 PM. Thirteen/WNET, PBS´ flagship public television station in New York City, will re-broadcast the entire telecast on Monday, May 27, at 9:00 PM, substantially increasing the TV audience for the awards show.

"This year, in the aftermath of September 11, the awards have more significance than ever before," said Sheward. "By celebrating excellence in New York theatre, we will also be celebrating the spirit of all New Yorkers and those in the theatre who have carried on nobly in the wake of the disaster."

"We are delighted that both NY1 News and Thirteen/WNET will again be carrying coverage of these important theatrical awards," said Blume who will serve as Executive Producer of the telecast for the fourth consecutive year. "The Drama Desk Awards are important marketing tools for the entire theatrical community but especially for the Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway productions. By telecasting the awards show throughout the tri-state metropolitan area on NY1 and later on WNET, we are able to reach a large percentage of those theatre-goers who regularly support Off and Off Off Broadway."
